DO NOT REMOVE EMPTY FOLDERS FROM YOU MAILBOX ONCE YOU HAVE ARCHIVED THE CONTENTS OF IT!!!
This applies to Lotus Domino 8.0.2 and 8.5
Archived folders and all contents are removed from the Archive database when deleted from the mail file
Folders that contain documents in the archive database are removed when the empty folder is deleted from the mail file. The documents will be present in the All Documents view in the archive database. In other words folders that contain documents in the archive database are removed when the folder is deleted from the mail file.
Steps to reproduce
1. Create a folder in the inbox and copy/move some documents into it
2. Navigate to the folder, select all the documents and "Archive Selected Documents"
3. Verify that the archived folder has been created in the archive
4. Delete the Folder from the Inbox
5. From the inbox perform another Archive command like "Archive Now"
6. Navigate to the Archive and notice that the archive folder has been deleted.
In a mailfile with many folders, use archiving to archive all contents of several different folders may be needed when projects or discussions end.
Once those documents are archived, in mailfile you would not require the empty folders and would delete these (now empty) folders.
The next archive function will delete the folders from the archive db as well.
The documents will be fine, but it will not be so easy to find them as they are only listed in the All Documents view and there is not way to put them back in the folders other than redoing the entire process of creating the folders in the archive and moving the documents from the All Documents view back into the respective folders provided you have the time and patience to do it all over again.
Other observations:
This does not happen in Lotus Domino versions 7.0.3, 8.0 and 8.0.1
IBM ESR solution 1 - If you have upgraded to Lotus Domino version 8.0.2 or Lotus Domino 8.5 . roll back (yes roll back) to version 8.0.1
IBM ESR solution 2 - Do NOT use archiving.
As for a request for a hot fix for this solution to IBM, it was turned down as "its not important enough for the software team to release a hot fix"... Wow..users are suffering but that is the answer I got ..
Now to add to it, what do we tell all the users that have already archived thousands of emails and have deleted the folders and have lost them in the archive, will let you know that one when I find the explanation that works best.
